Calling all interior decorators...

4 March 2006, 08:48

I need help (but what’s new?). We haven’t done much with Scout’s room since her arrival (what? after all that free time I have on my hands now???) and I’ve been having me some visions about an elegant colour scheme to suit our cheesy monkey.

At the moment, the room is pretty basic – off-white walls and wooden floorboards with cherry-wood furniture and caffe latte coloured curtains. I want to get an off-white bookshelf (to offset the heaviness of the furniture) and paint the crappy wooden piano stool the same off-white and paint flowers on the top.

Question is, what colour scheme? I’m thinking either:

  • rose pink and pale yellow with red highlights
  • rose pink and lime green with red highlights
  • rose pink and caffe latte with red highlights

At the moment I’m leaning toward #1, but am open to other alternative ideas given what’s already in the room…

The room currently looks like this:

Scout's Room View #1
Scout's Room View #2

I’m not sure whether to paint a feature wall or paint all the walls below the hip-level trim (??? don’t know what this sticky-outy bit is actually called). Any advice from creatively inclined people?

Now all I have to do is wean Scouter and reclaim a couple of hours in my days to achieve the vision. Sigh.

  1. I like colour choice 1. For my daughter’s nursery, I went to Spotlight (AKA The Bunnings for Girls) and bought some plain wooden placemat and coasters in the shape of flowers from the craft section, then painted them pink, lime green and lavender. I stuck them to the walls with blu-tac. That way I didn’t have to paint whole walls to add some colour to the room and they can be moved around easily. They only cost a couple of dollars. They also have wooden letters, so I did the same with her name and put it over her cot.

  3. I like the sound of colour scheme one as well as it would work well with what you already have.

  4. I’ll vote for anything that isn’t lime green ;-)

  5. thing round the room at hip level is called a daido rail apparently (according to my aunt who ‘does’ interior decorating). i won’t however, venture an opinion on the colour scheme though, as i have no colour/style sense at all (i’m an englishman for goodness sakes!)

  6. Ole No.1 says: Scheme #1 sounds good; Main thing: lots of light and colours to make one feel sunny. Her first response was “yellows and light blues”, but Sophie is a girl, so I guess that rules out blue? I asked her since I also have “no colour/style sense”.

  7. I love colour scheme number two – rose pink and lime green, and I definitely think a feature wall would be awesome. Lots of flowers and happy pictures. Can’t wait to see it finished.

  9. How about you leave it as it is and let toys, books, mobiles add the colour ….. less work & you don’t have to change it later!!

  10. Maybe make a feature of the bottom section below the diado rail and skirting and leave the rest as is. Get some bright fun curtains perhaps add some beaded door curtains behind new curtains for colour and fun (maybe butterflies or stars) and add a bright funky rug.

  11. Oooh, Bron I like the sound of the beaded door curtains… where does one get these things, oh ye of great creative genius??? We are in the process of getting ourselves a bright girlie-girl rug from Bug Rugs and think have decided to go the pale rose pink below the diado rail and paint the diado rail red (dark pinkish red – NOT red with orange tones)
