Cynics Alert

3 March 2007, 07:56

I’m on the tram yesterday and standing in the aisle. A lovely younger gentleman gets up and offers me his seat.

My first reaction?

“Omigod, he doesn’t think I’m PREGNANT does he? I mean, I know my tummy is not what it used to be, but surely I don’t look PREGNANT?”

How sad that a kind gesture immediately got misinterpreted.

  1. :) i’m two weeks away from my due date and people STILL won’t give up their seat for me on the train. my husband was saying yesterday that he has started giving his seat up for ladies in general. i seem to be having an impact!

  2. The operative word is “immediately”. It’s surprising how we can rush to judgement, in an instant, and ultimately be proved wrong. Still, it is unusual these days for a young woman to be offered a seat. Still, I was on a tram in Sth Yarra recently and a senior schoolboy from Melb’s most expensive school had his bags strewn all across the seats reserved for the elderly and other pensioners. An older woman was left standing. I felt like saying something but thought “Cool it”. Something along the lines of, “You will be old someday too.” Ultimately, it’s up to parents to inculcate virtues in our younger people.

  3. You used to live in Japan right? At least he didn`t say `Here you go, because your pregnant` Some peoples bluntness here is shocking!

If someone stood up for me on the train that would be my reaction too!

I get asked if I am pregnant all the time!!! Or get told `futotta ne!` (You got fat) a lot too!!!

I am sure he was just a lovely guy!!! I am sure he didn`t think you looked pregnant!
