6 Year Anniversary

16 May 2010, 10:29

Husband booked Lau’s Family Kitchen months ago. Apparently this is the mark of an in-demand restaurant – leave a booking til the last minute at your peril, people! Their website similarly speaks the language of popularity – there is nothing on it apart from the address. They don’t need any detail about their restaurant! Word of mouth is enough! And of course, the fact that it is owned by Gilbert Lau, once owner of the Flower Drum is a drawcard…

So we made our way into St Kilda on a beautifully clear but chilly May night, having left Scout talking the ears off our beloved neighbours Frank and Henry. That girl likes to talk.

The atmosphere at Lau’s is lovely and welcoming (exposed concrete beams, wood panelling and simple but moody lighting). Likewise, the service is attentive but not intrusive. And it was clearly a popular place as it was packed.

The food was good, but I have to say, from a chinese cuisine perspective, not particularly inspirational. The pork tenderloin for entree was nice, but a tad gristly (gristle makes me angry) and for main I had the Crispy Skin Poussin, which was delightfully succulent, although not boned, so I struggled a bit with it logistically. And it didn’t taste remotely chinese. Husband scoffed the King Prawns, which was a generous serve of plump prawns wok-fried with garlic and ginger.

The side of rice seemed redundant and not particularly good rice – tasted a bit dry. What was particularly good was my (gasp!) Mahi Sauvignon Blanc from NZ – my oh my how I miss a good SB during pregnancy. But fuckit, it was my anniversary and I was going to quaff a good glass of wine!

Of course, the highlight of the night was the company of my beautiful husband – happy anniversary baby, I love you!
